What does your BP (blood pressure) reading means?

Have you been in a clinic lately? I bet at least once in your lifetime you visited one. One thing that we usually observe is the nurse will take blood pressure using the sphygmomanometer.

Blood pressure is measured as two values: systolic over diastolic. Systolic is the highest pressure produced when heart contracts. Diastolic is the lowest pressure reached when the heart relaxes. A reading of 120/80 used to considered most desirable. Recent research suggests even that maybe a little high. 110/70 is preferable, but the lower generally the better-there's less work for the heart with every beat.

If high pressure is found during an annual checkup, it should be checked frequently. Blood pressure also varies minute and minute. The best readings are when you are calm and at rest. Here are some important numbers to remember the next time your blood pressure is tested:

  • A diastolic of 90-104 means mild hypertension; 105-114 means: moderate hypertension; over 115 means severe hypertension
  • A diastolic below 90 but systolic of 140-159 means border-line systolic hypertension; over 160 means elevated systolic hypertension

It's good to know this facts and to keep your watch in this indicator, because, health is wealth.
